Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) finally gets some good news in Coronation Street next week when she stands up for the first time since her stroke. However, the triumph is short-lived when a thoughtless joke leaves her mortified.
The troubled teen has been dealing with physical and communication difficulties, including dysarthria and aphasia, after a stroke caused by experimenting with non-fatal strangulation during consensual sex with her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne). The revelation has caused chaos on the Street, with Betsy's mum Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) blaming Dylan and trying to report him to the police.
Betsy's best friend Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) was also convinced Dylan deserved to be behind bars and even attacked him herself. Dylan's dad Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) stood by his son, while Dylan, consumed with guilt, accused his best mate Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) of sleeping with Betsy. Brody refused to let Dylan rewrite history, forcing him to finally take responsibility.
A breakthrough moment
Next week, Betsy has a breakthrough in physiotherapy, much to Lauren's delight. But the moment of triumph is short-lived when she suffers a devastating blow. When Lauren pops round to visit, Betsy is annoyed that she spends the whole time texting her new boyfriend Ollie Driscoll (Raphael Akuwudike). Betsy admits to Lisa that she feels lonely, seeing Lauren loved up with Ollie as another reminder of the normal life she doesn't have anymore.
Later, with the help of her physiotherapist, Betsy stands up for the first time since her stroke. It's a truly joyous moment. Meanwhile, Lauren suggests to Ollie that they pay Betsy a visit and take her some of his cake. But when Lauren calls with Ollie, it doesn't exactly go well, prompting Lauren to insist on taking Betsy out for lunch.
Humiliation in the bistro
In the bistro, Betsy knocks some cutlery off the table. Lauren quickly goes to her aid, but Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) jokes that Betsy must be drunk. Debbie didn't mean to be cruel, making the joke due to completely losing her filter thanks to dementia. However, that doesn't make it hurt any less for Betsy, who is left utterly mortified and humiliated by the encounter.
The heartbreaking setback leaves viewers wondering if it will affect her recovery.
