Coronation Street Adds Last-Minute World Cup Scene, Fans Delighted

Coronation Street marked England's recent victory at the World Cup with a specially filmed last-minute scene that aired in Monday's episode (July 13). The football team advanced to the quarter-finals following their 2-1 triumph over Norway on Saturday (July 11) at the Miami Stadium. England will face Argentina in the semi-final on Wednesday (July 15).

Last-Minute Scene Features Tyrone and Kirk

To acknowledge the team's success, ITV soap Coronation Street recorded a last-minute scene that opened Monday's episode. In it, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and Kirk Sutherland (Andrew Whyment) began singing the novelty anthem "Three Lions" by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner, and the Lightning Seeds while standing on the cobbles.

Kirk told Tyrone he felt confident England would reach the final after their clash with Argentina. He also shared that he longed for his late grandfather to be alive to see the team's achievements, according to the Daily Star. Thrilled by England's victory, Tyrone seized Kirk's arm and they strolled down the cobbles singing the chorus.

Behind-the-Scenes Timing

Given that Coronation Street typically films approximately six to eight weeks ahead of broadcast, this scene was shot recently before being inserted into the completed edit. The quick turnaround allowed the show to reflect the real-world football excitement.

Fan Reactions

Reacting to the scene on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, viewers were full of praise. One person commented: "It was a nice touch today with the added scene about England playing Argentina." Another remarked: "It was funny, made me smile." Echoing their sentiments, a third chimed in: "Yes I thought that as well."

On X, a fan declared: "Loved the opening of #Corrie with Tyrone and Kirk - @alanhalsall Most likely filmed Sunday morning before the Tours started. Loved the World Cup reference. Hope they're filming again for Friday if we make the Final, then for Monday if we win." A fifth wrote: "I love the attempts soaps make to give the shows a live, happening now feel to the programmes, even though these scenes usually feel a bit random." While a sixth added: "Loved that when I saw it earlier."

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
