Channel 5's new thriller Missed Call premieres tonight, starring Joanna Scanlan as a single mother whose daughter vanishes during a school trip to France. The five-part series follows Sarah as she takes matters into her own hands after her daughter Katie disappears from a school exchange in Saint Michel.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Scanlan revealed that the ending is far from predictable. 'I definitely didn't guess the end when I was reading it. I would defy anybody other than Sherlock Holmes to do so,' she said. 'It's a really good plot. Really, really chunkily enjoyable plot.'
Scanlan warned viewers not to expect a straightforward resolution. 'We have a lot of very fabulous suspects – wonderful, exotic, interesting, plausible suspects. I mean, I won't even say it ends well. It's not a guarantee that we're going to run through this and have the answer we want at the end of it.'
The actress described the series as 'multi-layered', adding: 'What happens in that village when Sarah arrives and starts kicking the hornet's nest is that all sorts of really nasty things emerge. And it's much darker, actually, than you might anticipate from the start of the story.'
Rupert Graves, who plays Jason, also discussed his character's secrets. 'Inevitably, she looks at people and people have secrets. They start to come out and some of them are unsavoury. Jason definitely has mysteries and secrets.'
The official synopsis reads: 'Set against the backdrop of a picturesque French village, Missed Call follows single mother Sarah, whose world is upended after receiving a late-night missed call from her teenage daughter Katie while she's on a school exchange. When Sarah arrives in France, she finds the host family and local authorities disturbingly indifferent to Katie's disappearance.'
