Channel 5 Replaces The Teacher with Ben Fogle China Show

Channel 5 has officially announced the replacement for its popular drama series The Teacher, as the show's third season draws to a close this week. The final episode of the school-based anthology is scheduled to air on Thursday, April 2, at 9pm, marking the end of a brief but intense four-episode run that began on Monday, March 30.

The Teacher's Final Act

Starring Victoria Hamilton, Steve Edge, Alice Grant, Olly Rhodes, and Peter Ash, The Teacher season 3 made its comeback only this week, surprising fans with its swift conclusion. The drama, set in Sheffield but filmed in Spain, follows Helen Simpson, a veteran teacher with 30 years of experience portrayed by Victoria Hamilton, who clashes with the woke ideologies of the younger generation.

The storyline centres on Helen's conflict with influential student Cressida Bancroft, played by Alice Grant, after Helen accuses her of being a woke warrior seeking popularity. This clash of ideals leads Cressida to turn the world against Helen, targeting her family, including her son Sam. As Helen investigates Cressida's past, she uncovers a world of sadness and neglect, raising the question of whether she can prevent Cressida's final act of revenge.

New Programming Takes the Stage

With The Teacher ending, Channel 5 has confirmed that a brand new three-part factual series, China with Ben Fogle, will fill the 9pm slot starting Monday, April 6. Similar to The Teacher, it will air over consecutive nights at 9pm, from April 6 to April 8.

The synopsis describes Ben Fogle embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to China, exploring its staggering sights, meeting its biggest characters, and going beyond stereotypes to discover its true story. Fogle delves into a 3000-year tale of imperial rule, communist revolution, and recent economic transformation, from ancient temples to mega-factories and modern cities. The series aims to get under the skin of China, examining how it sees itself in the world and shapes the future, all while showcasing the visual splendour of the country today.

Upcoming Drama: Missed Call

In addition to the factual series, Channel 5 has revealed plans for a new five-part thriller, Missed Call, scheduled for April, although a specific start date is yet to be confirmed. The drama will star Joanna Scanlan, known for Slow Horses, and Robert Lindsay from Sherwood.

Set in a picturesque French village, Missed Call follows single mother Sarah, whose world is turned upside down when she receives a missed call late at night from her teenage daughter Katie, who is away on a school exchange. When Katie stops messaging back, Sarah's concern grows. Despite assurances from the host family, school, and supervising teacher that Katie is out with friends, Sarah senses something is wrong and takes matters into her own hands by flying to France.

The Teacher season 3 finale airs on Thursday, April 2, at 9pm on Channel 5, paving the way for these new programmes that promise to captivate audiences with diverse storytelling and compelling narratives.
