The launch of the second series of Celebrity Traitors has become the most-watched programme of 2026, drawing more viewers than England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. Consolidated ratings from Barb show that an average of 15.41 million UK viewers watched the first episode within seven days of its broadcast on October 1.
This figure surpasses the 14.93 million who watched the BBC's coverage of England's semi-final loss to Argentina on July 15. The seven-day audience for the Celebrity Traitors launch also set a new record for any episode of The Traitors, either celebrity or civilian format, exceeding the previous high of 14.94 million set by the final of the inaugural celebrity series.
Record-Breaking Viewership
The consolidated ratings measure UK viewers who watch a programme up to a week after its first broadcast or release, including those on computers, tablets, smartphones, and television sets. The second episode also performed strongly, attracting 14.95 million viewers in its seven-day consolidated figures.
The current series began on the BBC on Thursday, October 1, with immediate drama as Richard E Grant announced himself as a traitor to the startled reaction of fellow players. The show, fronted by Claudia Winkleman, is set at Ardross Castle.
Comedians' Advantage
Rob Beckett, who was murdered by the current batch of traitors, explained why comedians tend to perform well on the show. He said: "It doesn't matter who you're in a room with, if you're funny, you've got a little bit of control of that room, because you can completely deflect with humour."
Beckett added: "You can close conversations down. You can change their emotions if they're frustrated and inquisitive. But then you get a laugh out of them. Then it's all switched. So it's quite a lot of power in those situations if you can disarm people with humour."
While 28-day ratings for The Celebrity Traitors will not be available for several weeks, they are likely to show the launch audience climbing beyond the seven-day mark.
