Catherine Tyldesley Exits Channel 5 Drama Amid Coronation Street Comeback
Actress Catherine Tyldesley has reportedly stepped away from her prominent role in the Channel 5 drama The Good Ship Murder due to scheduling conflicts with her highly anticipated return to Coronation Street. The 42-year-old star reprised her role as Eva Price on the iconic soap in October 2025, marking her comeback after an eight-year absence from the cobbles.
Filming Conflicts Force Departure from The Good Ship Murder
Tyldesley, who has starred as first officer Kate Woods in the Channel 5 series since its inception in 2023, will make her final appearance in the upcoming fourth series. According to sources, the actress will take a brief hiatus from Coronation Street filming later this year to travel to Malta and shoot her exit scenes for the drama.
A source close to the production revealed to The Sun: "When she agreed to return to the soap there was a lot of uncertainty about whether or not she would be able to go back, but fortunately it's all working out. There was talk about possibly killing off her character but in the end bosses decided that she would get a happy ending. The writers are delighted that Cath is able to return to film her exit."
Coronation Street's Return to 'Golden Age' Storylines
Following her return to the long-running soap, Tyldesley has been vocal about the show's creative direction. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail in November, she explained how producers are working to restore Coronation Street to its "golden age" with traditional, character-driven narratives.
"What Kate Brooks our wonderful producer has done is bring back an old school Corrie feeling," Tyldesley stated. "She is super passionate about that and she is a big Corrie fan and that was one of the reasons I agreed to come back, was because of her vision for the show and where she wanted to take it."
The actress emphasized the importance of strong female characters and storylines that resonate with the audience, reminiscing about iconic Rovers Return landladies like Bet Lynch and Vera Duckworth. "It's important to move with the times but also know who your target audience is," she added.
Overcoming Industry Pressures and Personal Challenges
In a candid reflection on her career, Tyldesley recently disclosed that she remains "haunted" by a fat-shaming comment made by a director during an early audition. Speaking on the AgeLess podcast, she recalled: "I remember going to an audition and the director saying to me, 'Cath, you're hilarious - you're always going to be the fat funny one. You're a character actress.' I loved comedy, but I also wanted to be a leading lady. That comment stayed with me."
The actress, who shares son Alfie, 10, and daughter Iris, 3, with personal trainer husband Tom Pitfield, has since adopted a healthier perspective on beauty standards. "I remember in my younger years, I felt a lot of pressure to look a certain way, as a lot of actresses did, and I would crash-diet," she told The Sun's Fabulous magazine. "Whereas, now, I'm older and wiser, I know what my body needs and I respect it a lot more than I did then."
Tyldesley's focus has shifted towards health and longevity, prioritizing stamina and strength to be present for her children. The Good Ship Murder, which also features Shayne Ward and Ross Adams, has become a significant success for Channel 5, though Tyldesley's departure marks the end of an era for the popular drama series.
