Carol McGiffin Opens Up About Loose Women Departure and Censorship Claims
Carol McGiffin, a former panellist on ITV's long-running chat show Loose Women, has publicly detailed the reasons behind her departure from the programme after decades of involvement. The 66-year-old broadcaster, who first appeared on the show in 2000 and remained until 2013 before returning from 2018 to 2023, described a significant shift in the show's atmosphere and content over the years.
The 'Straw That Broke the Camel's Back'
In a candid interview with Andrew Gold, McGiffin revealed that the pivotal moment leading to her exit was related to discussions about the pandemic. She stated, 'Well, we didn't have the fake pandemic then. That was the straw which broke the camel's back, really.' This comment highlights her frustration with the changing dynamics of the show, which she contrasted sharply with its earlier years.
Reflecting on the programme's heyday, McGiffin expressed nostalgia, saying, 'And back in the day, it was absolutely brilliant - even I sit there looking at the old clips and just think, 'Wow, that show was brilliant.' It was hilarious, it was funny, everybody got on, it was sassy - it was just completely different.' She emphasised that the current version is 'not like that anymore,' pointing to a loss of the edgy, spontaneous humour that once defined it.
Censorship and Creative Restrictions
McGiffin elaborated on her experiences with censorship during her time on Loose Women, claiming she was frequently restricted in what she could say. 'I got censored so many times I cannot tell you,' she disclosed. According to her, production meetings often involved discussions about topics for the show, where she would propose ideas only to be told, 'No, you can't say that.'
She further alleged that panellists felt pressured to conform, stating, 'I am pretty sure there are people on that show who don't think like that, but they do because they want to keep their job.' This environment, she suggested, stifled genuine debate and contributed to a more sanitised format. McGiffin also recalled past disagreements with co-star Carol Vorderman over permissible topics, including a notable dispute about the moon landing, which McGiffin expressed scepticism about.
Contract Disputes and Final Departure
The broadcaster's exit was also influenced by contractual issues. In April 2023, McGiffin explained that she left due to an unsatisfactory contract offer from ITV, saying, 'I feel quite upset about it, if I'm honest, because although it is my decision, I felt like it was one I was being forced to make. No one in their right mind would have signed that contract.' She added that she saw 'no way back from it,' indicating a permanent break from the show.
Reports from The Mail on Sunday suggested that a free speech row was central to her departure, following backlash from a radio interview where she criticised increased policing of speech in media. McGiffin had remarked, 'I always look back at when I started working in television and radio as the good old days because they were much less policed, I suppose. Much less restricted and it was a freer place to be.'
Denying Rumours of a Return
Recently, McGiffin addressed speculation about a potential comeback to Loose Women, firmly denying any such plans. After a magazine article questioned whether she could save the show, she took to Instagram to clarify, 'Just wanted to say I did not instigate this article but I’m flattered that [they] even ask the question ‘could she save the show!!!' And, for the record, not a chance of a return.' She emphasised her contentment with semi-retirement in the South of France with her husband.
Loose Women continues to air weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX from 12:30pm, but McGiffin's revelations shed light on the internal challenges and evolving nature of the programme. Her insights offer a glimpse into the pressures faced by television personalities in an era of heightened sensitivity and media regulation.
