Fans of Call the Midwife who are eagerly awaiting new episodes can now binge-watch another beloved period drama set in the 1930s. The Durrells, which originally aired on ITV in 2016, has been praised for its heartwarming story and stunning scenery.
A Glimpse into the Durrell Family
Based on the best-selling book trilogy by Gerald Durrell, the series chronicles his childhood on the Greek island of Corfu. The show follows Louisa Durrell, played by Keeley Hawes, who moves her family from Bournemouth to Corfu after struggling financially following the death of her husband.
Louisa's four children include Lawrence (Josh O'Connor), Gerald (Milo Parker), Leslie (Callum Woodhouse), and Margo (Daisy Waterstone). All Creatures Great and Small fans will recognise Callum Woodhouse as rule-breaking veterinarian Tristan Farnon.
Award-Winning Drama
The Durrells consists of four seasons and earned a BAFTA and a TV Choice Award for Best Drama Series in 2017. Seasons two and three hold a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan described it as: "Full of sibling squabbles, an exasperated mother and gorgeous beach scenery. Despite the family drama, Durrells always maintains a sweet, loving tone."
Fan Recommendations
On Reddit, a Call the Midwife fan asked for recommendations for a "cosy historical" show. One reply suggested: "The Durrells or All Creatures Great and Small!" Another fan called it "great" and added Grantchester as a similar option.
On IMDb, viewers have described the show as a "Lovely, quirky show" and "Heart-warming but in a good way." Another wrote: "I see this as a charming, sun-baked, Mediterranean-blue inspired bit of froth. The family is suitably wacky, the scenery is stunning and the script is full of good fun. Opa!"
The Durrells is available to stream on Disney+. All seasons of Call the Midwife are available on BBC iPlayer.
