Former Eurovision winner Cheryl Baker has suggested Cardiff as the ideal host city for the 2023 contest, following the decision to move the event from Ukraine due to the ongoing war. Baker, who won with Bucks Fizz in 1981, told BBC Breakfast that the host city needs an international airport, a large venue, and sufficient hotels, and she believes Cardiff fits the bill.
Baker, now part of The Fizz, stressed that Ukraine should remain heavily involved in the production. "As long as Ukraine are completely involved... we've basically given them the shell to do it," she said, adding that Ukrainian presenters and production teams should be central to the event.
Other cities including London, Manchester, and Sheffield are also vying to host, while fellow former winner Lulu has pitched for Glasgow. Lulu, who won in 1969, described Glasgow as "music mad" and said it would make "the most fabulous hosts." Scotland last hosted in 1972 in Edinburgh.
This year's UK runner-up Sam Ryder reminded fans that the 2023 contest is "Ukraine's party," with the UK merely providing the venue. Kalush Orchestra's lead singer Oleh Psiuk expressed sadness at not hosting but gratitude to the UK, hoping the event will have a Ukrainian flavour.
The UK has hosted Eurovision more times than any other country, with 2023 marking the ninth occasion. London mayor Sadiq Khan highlighted the city's large Ukrainian community, while Sheffield and Manchester have also confirmed their bids.
