Bridgerton Season Five to Spotlight Groundbreaking Queer Romance

Netflix's acclaimed period drama Bridgerton is set to make television history with its upcoming fifth season, which will centre on the series' first queer love story. The new season will shift focus to the introverted middle daughter of the Bridgerton family, Francesca, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, and her complex romantic entanglement with Michaela, played by Masali Baduza.

A Historic Departure for Period Drama

This narrative marks a significant departure from traditional period dramas, which have often excluded queer relationships. Hannah Dodd emphasised the importance of this representation in an interview with Netflix's Tudum, stating: "Queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist – so they deserve a love story just like everybody else."

The plot will follow Francesca as she decides to re-enter the marriage market for practical reasons, two years after the death of her husband, John. However, the return of his cousin, Michaela, to London stirs complicated feelings, forcing Francesca to question whether to adhere to her pragmatic plans or pursue her inner passions.

Cast and Character Developments

Hannah Dodd made her debut as Francesca in the show's third season, which aired in 2024, taking over the role from Ruby Stokes, who portrayed the character in the first two seasons. Stokes departed due to scheduling conflicts. Masali Baduza's character, Michaela, was introduced in the season three finale, setting the stage for this pivotal storyline.

Baduza highlighted the significance of portraying a realistic and positive queer love story on screen, noting: "I think [this] is really important for a lot of the queer community to see onscreen, to know that it can work out, and that they deserve to also feel love."

Showrunner's Praise for the Leading Duo

Showrunner Jess Brownell expressed immense admiration for Dodd and Baduza, praising their talent and chemistry. Brownell remarked: "I cannot say enough good things about Hannah and Masali. The two of them have such a beautiful friendship and support each other in such a beautiful way. But beyond that, I really do think that they are two incredibly talented and special performers. They're actors who are able to say so much with just an expression, with just their faces."

Bridgerton's Evolving Narrative Arc

The series has previously focused on the romantic journeys of other Bridgerton siblings:

  • Season one featured Daphne's marriage to Simon Basset.
  • Season two centred on Anthony's union with Kate Sharma.
  • Season three highlighted Colin's wedding to Penelope Featherington.
  • Season four explored Benedict's romance with maid Sophie Baek.

While the core cast has largely remained consistent, the show has seen notable departures, including Regé-Jean Page after season one and Phoebe Dynevor after season two. Despite fan speculation about recasting these roles, Brownell recently denied such plans, telling Variety: "We are not interested in recasting the characters. I think it would [be] a disservice to everything Regé and Phoebe set up in season one, and all the beautiful work they put into those characters."

Production for Bridgerton season five is currently underway, with the season scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2027, promising to deliver a heartfelt and historic love story that challenges the conventions of the genre.
