Bridgerton Season 5 to Feature First Queer Love Story with Francesca and Michaela
Bridgerton Season 5 Introduces First Queer Romance

Production is now officially underway for the highly anticipated fifth season of Netflix's global phenomenon, Bridgerton. This new instalment will mark a significant milestone for the series, as it introduces the show's first-ever queer love story, centring on the introverted middle Bridgerton daughter, Francesca, portrayed by Hannah Dodd.

A Historic Romance for the Ton

The upcoming season will follow Francesca as she decides, for purely practical reasons, to re-enter the marriage mart two years after the tragic loss of her husband, John. However, her pragmatic plans are thrown into disarray with the return to London of John's cousin, Michaela, played by Masali Baduza. The narrative will delve into Francesca's "complicated feelings," forcing her to question whether to adhere to her sensible intentions or courageously pursue her inner passions.

Championing Representation On-Screen

Hannah Dodd, who made her debut as Francesca in the show's third season, has spoken passionately about the importance of this storyline. "Queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist – so they deserve a love story just like everybody else," Dodd told Netflix's official fan site, Tudum. This romance aims to portray a narrative traditionally "excluded from period dramas," bringing a fresh and inclusive perspective to the Regency-era world.

Masali Baduza, whose character Michaela was first introduced in the season three finale, echoed this sentiment. She emphasised the show's goal to provide "a realistic view of queer love onscreen and give them a happily ever after." Baduza added, "I think [this] is really important for a lot of the queer community to see onscreen, to know that it can work out, and that they deserve to also feel love."

Showrunner Praises Leading Duo

Showrunner Jess Brownell has expressed immense confidence and admiration for the new leading pair. "I cannot say enough good things about Hannah and Masali. The two of them have such a beautiful friendship and support each other in such a beautiful way," Brownell stated. She further praised their acting prowess, noting, "I really do think that they are two incredibly talented and special performers. They're actors who are able to say so much with just an expression, with just their faces."

Evolution of the Bridgerton Saga

The series has historically focused on a different Bridgerton sibling each season. The eldest daughter, Daphne, found love with Simon Basset in season one, followed by Anthony's romance with Kate Sharma in season two. Season three culminated with the marriage of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, while season four centred on second son Benedict's relationship with maid Sophie Baek.

While the core ensemble has largely remained, the show has seen notable departures, including Regé-Jean Page after season one and Phoebe Dynevor following season two. Despite fan speculation about potential recasting to bring these characters back, Brownell has firmly denied such plans. She told Variety, "We are not interested in recasting the characters. I think it would [be] a disservice to everything Regé and Phoebe set up in season one, and all the beautiful work they put into those characters."

The role of Francesca itself saw a recast earlier, with Ruby Stokes portraying the character in the first two seasons before Hannah Dodd took over due to Stokes' scheduling conflicts. Baduza's Michaela is a new addition, making her debut in the season three finale.

Anticipated Release and Cultural Impact

Bridgerton season five is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2027. This groundbreaking queer love story is poised to expand the show's rich tapestry, offering a narrative that champions visibility and authentic representation within the lavish, historically-inspired setting that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.
