The highly anticipated second series of the BBC's multi-award winning comedy thriller, Black Ops, officially launches this week, bringing back the chaotic world of MI5's most unlikely agents.
Premiere Date and Broadcast Details
Series two of Black Ops begins on Thursday, January 8. The action kicks off on BBC One and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 9:30pm. The show will continue in this weekly Thursday evening slot for the duration of its run.
The new season finds our heroes, Dom and Kay, attempting to navigate a new life within the security services. Having traded their former criminal exploits for official government work, they are now desk-bound MI5 employees. The synopsis for the opening episode reveals Dom's ambition clashing with the reality of menial archive work, while Kay pines for his previous role as a PCSO. A risky gamble by Dom to impress a senior officer soon spirals into dangerous territory for the pair.
Returning Cast and Exciting New Additions
The core trio from the first series all return for this new chapter. Gbemisola Ikumelo and Hammed Animashaun reprise their leading roles as the spirited Dom and the more cautious Kay, with Akemnji Ndifornyen back as gang boss Tevin.
This series also introduces a stellar line-up of guest stars who will cross paths with the duo. The new faces include Tom Stourton (known for Barbie and Poor Things), veteran actor Nigel Havers (Chariots of Fire), and Annette Badland (Heartstopper, Ted Lasso). They are joined by Ed Speleers (Star Trek: Picard) and Cathy Tyson (Death in Paradise).
What to Expect in the New Series
The mundane paperwork of their new jobs is swiftly upended when Dom encounters a charismatic spy named Steve. He draws them back into the exhilarating, high-stakes world of classified operations, promising a far cry from their desk-bound duties. The upcoming adventure promises to test their friendship, intelligence, and love for carnival to the absolute limit.
Gbemisola Ikumelo, who co-created, writes, and stars in the show, has teased a major step up for the series. She stated, "It's going to be a bigger, louder, crazier show. I'm actually quite shocked about the things we've been able to achieve in this series, so I'm looking forward to seeing how audiences respond."
Fans can settle in for a substantial new season, as series two comprises eight episodes in total, each running for 30 minutes. The blend of espionage thrills and character-driven comedy aims to prove that not all secret service work resembles a James Bond film—sometimes the most chaotic operations begin in the archives.
