Black Doves season 2 resolves the fate of Sarah Lancashire's character Reed, confirming she survives despite a family revelation that puts her in grave danger. The season's fourth episode explores Reed's past in Berlin, where a covert operation went disastrously wrong, leading to consequences that catch up with her in the present.
Reed's Past and the Wildflower Mission
Helen Webb (Keira Knightley), now the Prime Minister's wife, is given a covert assignment to retrieve files marked Wildflower alongside new agent Laila Joshi (Ambika Mod) during an event with her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan). Reed, however, has shared fewer details than usual, and her anxiety after the mission hints that Wildflower holds personal significance.
Reed is later taken by Robert Conteh (Babou Ceesay), who has become the organisation's chief. He discovers she has been in Paris investigating Wildflower, which was her code name during a past mission in Berlin. Reed is the only surviving agent from that operation, which went wrong years earlier.
Reed's Daughter and the Revenge Plot
The fourth episode reveals that while in Berlin, Reed had a daughter named Vita with Franz, a man she had pursued to gain insider intelligence. Reed wanted to leave the KGB-linked operation but was having an affair with fellow Black Dove agent Peter. After sabotaging the operation, she told Franz she was working undercover. Peter shot Franz, and when he attacked Reed, she shot him in self-defence. Vita witnessed the incident and fled.
In the present, Helen and Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) locate Reed and rescue her with agents Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy), getting her out alive with help from Laila. Sam, forced to work for the rogue organisation Kestrel, chooses not to kill Reed despite the risk of defying orders.
Reed Survives Season 2
In the series finale, Reed faces further danger when it is revealed that her daughter Vita is actually Katia (Sylvia Hoeks), the wife of former KGB operative Alexi Chernov (Goran Kostić). Katia has returned to seek revenge on her mother and the Black Doves for abandoning her as a child.
Reed survives again when Williams, Eleanor and Laila raid the premises and kill the adversaries. As she flees, she reunites with Vita, who has been caught in the crossfire and appears to be dying. Vita asks why her mother never looked for her, and Reed explains she hoped Vita had lived a normal, peaceful life. After their exchange, Vita appears to succumb to her wounds.
Reed is last seen instructing Helen to kill Kestrel leader Patrick (Sam Riley). She survives season 2, but with the Black Doves more exposed than ever, her future remains uncertain. Black Doves season 2 is on Netflix.
