The Black Doves season two finale sees Keira Knightley's Helen Webb confront the fallout of her handler Reed's disappearance, with secrets from Reed's past putting Helen's family at risk and leaving her marriage hanging in the balance.
After Reed vanishes at the end of the opening episode, Helen and her closest friend Sam, played by Ben Whishaw, must uncover who took her and what she has been hiding. Sarah Lancashire returns as Reed, whose hidden past emerges through a series of flashbacks.
Reed's Berlin Mission and Daughter Revealed
Among the most significant revelations was Reed's participation in a historic mission in Berlin, which ended catastrophically due to Reed's impulsive decisions. Wildflower had been Reed's codename throughout the operation.
Viewers also learnt that while in Berlin, Reed had a daughter named Vita, who disappeared following the failed mission. In the final episode, it appeared that Sam, who had been assigned to eliminate Reed on the orders of rogue organisation Kestrel, had carried out his mission. He was offered membership of Kestrel, which he declined, as it emerged he had in fact delivered Reed to Kestrel alive.
Wallace Learns the Truth About Helen
Separate from Reed's narrative, newly appointed Prime Minister Wallace, played by Andrew Buchan, was becoming increasingly suspicious of his wife after officer Jim Perryman, played by Adam Best, alerted him that Helen was not who she claimed to be. Perryman had been given intelligence about Helen's real identity, which he relayed to Wallace.
One of the most compelling pieces of evidence that unmasked Helen was a photograph of her close friend Sam, who had been present at the murder of Russian oligarch Alexi Chernov, played by Goran Kostić. Alexi had been poisoned by Sam and fellow agent Eleanor, played by Gabrielle Creevy, during a dinner with Wallace and Helen.
Wallace instantly recognised Sam and subsequently confronted Helen about her true identity. Later, when Reed's daughter Vita, played by Sylvia Hoeks, threatened Helen with the lives of her children, she conceded that she had concealed a great deal from him and that his suspicions had been justified, but insisted that in that moment, he needed to trust her.
Wallace covered for Helen when Perryman questioned him about what had occurred between them, choosing to shield her rather than expose her. As the series drew to a close, Wallace and Helen were shown sitting down to discuss Helen's identity before the screen cut to black.
Vita's Revenge and the Final Confrontation
During an assault at the peace summit, Alexi Chernov's wife Katia, also played by Hoeks, was seized and taken to where Reed was being held captive. In a shocking twist, it emerged that Katia was in fact Reed's estranged daughter, Vita, who had returned seeking revenge on her mother for abandoning her as a child.
Vita revealed how she had been forced to grow up in a Soviet orphanage and was determined to make the Black Doves pay the price. In a further act of vengeance, she ordered Helen to kill her husband, the Prime Minister, and reveal her true identity, or face the deaths of her children.
Her son and daughter's childminder, Marie, played by Molly Chesworth, turned out to be a spy Reed had planted to gather intelligence on the family, and Katia used this as leverage against Helen, knowing she would never place her children in danger. Helen feigned shooting Wallace before she and Sam helped him flee and rushed to rescue her children from Marie.
Meanwhile, agents Williams, played by Ella Lily Hyland, Eleanor and Laila, played by Ambika Mod, confronted Kestrel in a bid to free Reed, who managed to escape without harm. She tracked down her wounded daughter, who demanded to know why she had never searched for her.
Reed confessed that she had hoped her daughter had simply gone on to live an ordinary life, wanting her to find peace — something she could never have with Reed around. Tragically, caught in the crossfire, Vita succumbed to her wounds.
With the immediate dangers resolved, Sam suggested that he, Helen and her children flee together, but Helen understood she wasn't yet in the clear. Unfortunately, Sam did not share this view, informing Helen he was departing as he had no grounds to stay.
While Sam was shown heading back to Italy, Reed instructed Helen to eliminate Kestrel leader Patrick, played by Sam Riley. Audiences will need to wait to discover whether Helen accomplishes her assignment, reveals everything to Wallace, and if Sam comes back to provide support once again.
