Big Little Lies season three is reportedly in development, with executive producers Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman confirming the news. The HBO drama, based on Liane Moriarty's novel, follows the lives of five women in Monterey whose children tie them together. Seasons one and two aired in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
Witherspoon revealed in an interview with USA TODAY that the team is in early talks with Moriarty, who has ideas for where the characters are now, a decade later. 'The children have grown up, they're now teenagers… as you can imagine, parenting those age children's got its sets of challenges,' she said.
Season two ended with the 'Monterey Five' turning themselves in for their role in Perry Wright's death. Season three is expected to pick up years later, following the aftermath of their confession. The main cast, including Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley, is expected to return.
Unlike season one, which was adapted from Moriarty's novel, season three will not be based on a book. However, Moriarty will contribute to the plot. Francesca Sloane has been chosen to write the first episode and will serve as an executive producer. A release date has not been announced, but it is not expected for at least a year.
