Britain's Got Talent Judges in Physical Golden Buzzer Clash
In a dramatic turn of events that epitomises the show's penchant for on-air drama, Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon engaged in a heated physical dispute over a Golden Buzzer during filming for this Saturday's episode of Britain's Got Talent. The altercation, which saw 66-year-old head judge Cowell and 47-year-old Dixon tussle over the buzzer for a computer game-themed act, resulted in co-judge Amanda Holden's microphone being shattered into pieces.
Competitive Chaos Unfolds
The conflict erupted when Cowell, having already used his Golden Buzzer earlier in the series for Australian para athlete Paul Nunnari, attempted to break the rules by pressing it a second time for another act. Dixon, described as fiercely competitive, intervened dramatically to prevent him. 'Simon had been winding me up so much and we were having back-and-forth banter,' Dixon told the Daily Mail. 'I saw him go to press it and thought, he ain't having it! I dived on it, broke Amanda's microphone, and hit my hand!'
She emphasised the intensity of the moment, stating it was 'definitely the most physical golden buzzer I've ever done on the show!' and attributing their rivalry partly to sharing the same birthday. Dixon added that she acted for her 12-year-old daughter, who she believed would love the act, despite not being a big computer fan herself.
Simon Cowell's Reaction to the Incident
Cowell, who clearly relished the chaos, confirmed the physical nature of the dispute. 'Sometimes we actually fight over the golden buzzers, and I'm not kidding, Alesha threw herself across the desk to stop me,' he said. 'She actually injured herself in the process! I mean, that's how competitive people get when there's a good act, sometimes there's a fight as to who's gonna press it first. It's really funny.'
The act that sparked this frenzy remains under wraps, with viewers set to discover its identity during Saturday's broadcast. The Golden Buzzer, introduced in 2014, grants acts an automatic pass to the live shows, with each judge and hosts Ant and Dec typically allowed one press per series, though this rule has been occasionally bent.
Background on This Series' Golden Buzzers
This series has already seen notable Golden Buzzer moments. Cowell was the first to use his, awarding it to Paul Nunnari on February 21 for his gravity-defying wheelchair stunts. Subsequently, judge KSI gave the second Golden Buzzer to 16-year-old magician Rafferty Coope, who impressed with a blend of music and magic.
The incident occurs amid reports of a shift in the judging panel's dynamics. Amanda Holden recently revealed that Cowell has shed his 'Mr Soft' persona, returning to his straightforward, critical style. 'Simon is back,' she said. 'He's been Mr Soft in recent years... I think Simon's just gone, 'actually, do you know what? Whatever you're saying, I agree with that as well.'' She praised the addition of KSI for bringing honesty and succinctness, contributing to a looser, more chaotic atmosphere this year.
Britain's Got Talent continues on Saturday at 7pm on ITV1, ITVX, and STV, promising more entertainment and potential clashes as the competition heats up.
