Beyond Paradise Actress Zahra Ahmadi Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Co-Star Kris Marshall
In an exclusive new interview, Beyond Paradise star Zahra Ahmadi has shared glowing insights into her working relationship with co-star Kris Marshall, as the latest series of the popular BBC drama unfolds with significant character developments.
Warm Praise for a 'Relentless' Leading Man
Zahra Ahmadi, who portrays Detective Sergeant Esther Williams in the Death in Paradise spin-off, spoke candidly about what it's truly like to work alongside Kris Marshall, who plays Detective Humphrey Goodman. "He takes his work very seriously, because he wouldn't be as successful as he is if he didn't," Ahmadi revealed. "But what I really admire about Kris is his energy. It's relentless."
She elaborated on how Marshall's positive attitude impacts the entire production. "And that's a huge responsibility when you're at the helm of a show like that, and you're leading the cast and crew," Ahmadi continued. "Often, I might come in and feel slightly tired or stressed, and you only need to look at Kris and go, 'No, actually, I need to take Kris' lead on things'. That's the thing I admire most."
Series Four Brings Emotional Shifts and Departures
The fourth series of Beyond Paradise has returned to screens, following Humphrey and Esther as they investigate crimes in the fictional town of Shipton Abbott. However, the new episodes bring significant changes, with Humphrey grappling with a difficult decision that will see him part ways with a team member.
Meanwhile, Esther faces her own emotional challenge as her on-screen daughter, Zoe Williams (played by Melina Sinadinou), reveals plans to leave Shipton Abbott and travel overseas. In Friday's episode, Zoe confided in Martha Goodman (Sally Bretton) about feeling bored with her life and considering a move to Australia after an encounter with PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn).
A Mother-Daughter Dynamic at a Crossroads
When discussing the evolving relationship between Esther and Zoe, Ahmadi described it as a pivotal moment. "This is the point of no return," she explained. "I think all parents and children go through it - the point where someone steps fully into adulthood, and both they and the parent realise that, and there's a shift. There's a massive shift."
"And I think that's what we're seeing here in series four, and that isn't easy for either of them, particularly for Esther," Ahmadi added. "It throws up all sorts of issues. We see that at play, and we see the cogs kind of turning. With that kind of reaching a point of no return, that kind of shift, we see what a good parent Esther is, because we see how well she's raised her daughter, and we see what a wonderful human Zoe is."
A Privileged Working Relationship
Ahmadi concluded her tribute to Marshall by emphasizing the value of their professional partnership. "He's got such great energy, he's got such a positive attitude, he's so warm, he's up for a good time, he's always finding the light-heartedness in things," she said. "And it's a real privilege to work with someone like that, because sometimes you need that, sometimes you need someone to gear you up, and he's really great at that."
Beyond Paradise is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer, with series four exploring these emotional dynamics while maintaining the show's signature crime-solving elements in its coastal setting.
