Kris Marshall's Beyond Paradise future in doubt as Humphrey faces exit twist

Kris Marshall's character Humphrey Goodman may be leaving the police force in Beyond Paradise after a budget-cutting ultimatum. In the latest series finale, which airs tonight on BBC, Humphrey is told he must axe one member of his team in the fictional Devon town of Shipton Abbot.

Fans fear Humphrey himself could be the one to go, though the decision remains unknown. Marshall, who has played the detective since 2013 in Death in Paradise and its spin-off, expressed his love for the show. 'I'm really happy where I am at the moment. Because I love the show, and I love the storylines. And it's quite a mad little show, and I love it,' he said.

Reflecting on his long tenure, Marshall noted the joy of evolving the character. 'I've never really played a character for as long. To revisit a character with a bit more miles on the clock…the more miles is great, because you get the opportunity to really evolve. Physically, 10 years, people do change,' he added. 'In Beyond Paradise, you follow more of his personal story.'

The actor also revealed he includes subtle homages in his performances. 'I'm always about putting little Easter eggs in the shows that I do. Obviously I'm a lover of movies and TV, and especially the detective genre, so, for me, I always put in a lot of marches to characters, and I love it when audiences spot them,' he said.
