Vigil season three debuts tonight with an almost entirely new cast ready to take the reins. Three years have gone by since Vigil was last on BBC One and now it returns for series three with another complex investigation to get stuck into.
This time around, all eyes are on Svalbard, Norway, after a British soldier that was on an undercover mission is killed but what was the real reason for his death? As fans gear up for Vigil to make an epic comeback this evening, Sunday, August 30, here’s a breakdown of its season three cast.
Returning faces and new arrivals
DCI Amy Silva may have been the one travelling around the world for the past two series but in season three, she will be leading the case from her base in Scotland. Actress Suranne Jones is no stranger when it comes to hit dramas, starring in the likes of Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster, Scott and Bailey and Coronation Street.
Kirsten welcomed her and Amy’s son in between series and now she is heading back to work as she travels to Svalbard to investigate the suspicious death. Actress Rose Leslie is best recognised for starring as Ygritte in the unforgettable fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Some of her other notable roles, however, have been in The Good Fight, Downton Abbey, Miss Austen, The Hack and Luther.
New characters in Svalbard
Henrick is Svalbard’s chief of police and is on hand when Kirsten arrives to give her all the details. He is brought to life by actor Jeppe Beck Laursen, a Norwegian actor famed for starring as Hæsten in the historical drama The Last Kingdom.
Actress Naomi Yang has had various roles in shows such as Peaky Blinders, Brassic, Wolfe, Maternal, DI Ray, Grace and Under Salt Marsh, to name a few. She is behind microbiologist Shen Jia who is at the heart of the mysterious investigation.
Georgian actor Tornike Gogrichiani will be remembered for starring in Drops of God and as a ruthless crime lord in the Netflix action film Extraction 2. In Vigil season three, Gogrichiani is behind Russian Colonel Fyodor who is also investigating the murder but from the Russian perspective.
More cast members and premiere details
Huang Chen is a fellow scientist working in Svalbard and is brought to life by actor Jason Tobin. He has had a number of roles in projects like Warrior, The Undeclared War and Disney Plus’ A Thousand Blows.
Actor Dominic Mafham has featured in shows such as Holby City, Humans, Grantchester, Little Disasters and Riot Women but his biggest part has been in The Clinic as Dan Woodhouse. He stars as Sir Ian Downing in Vigil, a high-ranking MI5 official who first appeared in the second outing.
Vigil season three premieres on Sunday, August 30, at 9pm, on BBC One.
