BBC weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans has confessed to creating a fake Facebook profile under a different name to avoid being recognised by old school friends. The 39-year-old star admitted he was desperate to distance himself from an awkward childhood phase.
Speaking on the Things We Don't Talk About podcast, Evans revealed: "I gave myself a fake name on Facebook because I was so embarrassed about my past." The popular broadcaster explained he'd gone through a particularly cringe-inducing period as a teenager that he didn't want former classmates to associate with his public persona.
The Childhood Phase He Wanted to Hide
While Evans didn't specify exactly what he was trying to conceal, he hinted it involved some questionable fashion choices and musical tastes that hadn't aged well. "We all go through phases we'd rather forget," he laughed, "mine just happened to coincide with the dawn of social media."
A Common Social Media Dilemma
The presenter's confession highlights a familiar modern dilemma - how to reconcile our past selves with our current identities in the digital age. Many listeners will relate to Evans' solution of creating an alternative online persona to avoid awkward connections.
Now comfortable in his own skin, the Welsh presenter has embraced his past quirks. "These days I own it all - the bad haircuts, the embarrassing hobbies, everything," he said. "But at the time, that Facebook alias felt like a lifesaver."
