Created by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age has captivated audiences with its lavish depiction of 1880s New York City high society. The HBO series, which premiered in January 2022, follows the conflicts between the nouveau riche Russell family and their old money neighbours, the van Rhijns.
The show has been praised for its opulent production design, winning an Emmy in 2022 for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program. Critics have described it as 'an excellent mix of soap opera drama and American history' and 'even better than the first season'.
Starring Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski, the series has earned multiple Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2024. Coon and Baranski were also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress respectively.
Audiences have been equally enthralled, with one viewer calling it 'one of the best series on TV' and praising the 'superb' acting and 'stunning' wardrobes. Another fan declared it their 'favourite period series', surpassing even Downton Abbey.
After a successful three-season run, The Gilded Age was renewed for a fourth season in 2025. While no official release date has been announced, the new season is expected to premiere later this year.
