Sandra Kerr, the BBC legend best known for creating the music for the children's television show Bagpuss, has died at the age of 84 following a battle with leukaemia. She died peacefully on October 29, with her son-in-law James Fagan releasing a statement on behalf of the family.
A Life in Music and Children's Television
Kerr also voiced the rag doll Madeleine in Bagpuss, a programme created by Smallfilms. Beyond Bagpuss, she was involved in BBC Radio, including programmes such as Listen with Mother and The Music Box.
She came from a family of musicians, including her folk musician daughter Nancy Kerr and her musician son-in-law James Fagan. Kerr was married to Northumbrian piper Ron Elliott from 1979 until his death in 1990, and is survived by her partner David Malone.
Family Statement and Tributes
James Fagan announced the news of Kerr's death, stating: "Our dear, darling Sandra Kerr slipped away yesterday, October 29, in the quiet hours of morning."
He added: "She was peaceful at the end. We spent a lot of time with her this week and were able to share many messages of love and support from friends with her."
Kerr had been diagnosed with leukaemia in March 2026 and underwent treatments and transfusions to support her health at the time.
Legacy Remembered
James Fagan continued: "Sandra was so beloved and will be missed by so many. We will remember her as a loving partner, a wonderful mother and a lovely nana to Hamish, Harry and Jasper."
Smallfilms, the company that created Bagpuss, also paid tribute to Kerr with a post that read: "Sandra's music brought joy to the world, and it will continue to inspire generations of musicians and storytellers."
The post added: "She taught the world so much with gentle and wise words as the voice of Madeleine the Rag Doll, and her role as Nooka will never be forgotten. We hope her musical rounds will be sung for years to come."
Kerr herself said she was "immensely proud" of her work on Bagpuss, and was quoted in Radio Times as saying: "I mean how often does a creative artist get that chance in their life?"
