BBC denies Celebrity Traitors teasing claims over James Acaster

The BBC has dismissed as "categorically untrue" reports that Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan teased James Acaster during filming of The Celebrity Traitors. A spokesperson told The Radio Times: "Claims of teasing amongst the cast on the show and claims of complaints about teasing are categorically untrue."

The denial follows a report in The Mail on Sunday on October 18, which cited a behind-the-scenes source claiming that Acaster had raised concerns with producers about being "teased and mocked" by the pair, who were "going too far" with certain jokes.

Claims of a misunderstanding

The source told The Mail on Sunday: "Rob and Romesh clearly thought they were having a bit of a laugh, but James began to feel quite a lot of it was at his expense and away from the cameras he started to get annoyed and upset by it."

The source added: "When Rob and Romesh get going together they are unstoppable and hilarious, but not at all malicious – it was more a misunderstanding. Rob and Romesh’s gags were all meant in good humour, but James just didn’t see it that way."

The BBC spokesperson continued: "There were no incidents of this nature and there is no evidence to support these allegations." Representatives for Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan also told The Independent that "these claims are completely untrue and couldn't be further from the truth".

Earlier reports of a filming pause

Ahead of the series' release on October 1, The Sun reported that Acaster became so distressed during production that fellow participants and crew members stepped in to pause filming. The publication said the comedian appeared increasingly anxious while shooting scenes at Ardross Castle, leading his fellow contestants to raise concerns with the Studio Lambert production crew.

A source told The Sun: "The show is incredibly intense and during one particular scene at the castle, James became very anxious and panicked."

The source added: "Some of the other celebrities on the show spoke up and said cameras should stop rolling so he could calm down, and production were in agreement as well. Everyone looks out for each other and there is a proper sense of camaraderie. It was good for James to have a breather, as everyone felt it was for the best."

Welfare response from producers

A spokeswoman for The Celebrity Traitors commented: "The Traitors is a unique and immersive game, and we recognise that taking part can be intense at times."

She added: "Our highest priority is always the safety and welfare of everyone taking part. Players are closely monitored and supported throughout by production, which includes a dedicated and experienced welfare team."

The Celebrity Traitors airs every Thursday and Friday from 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
