BBC Breakfast stars almost miss show after 12-hour delay

BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent almost missed Monday's show after their flight was delayed by 12 hours, leaving them stuck at Geneva Airport.

The pair had been away for the weekend with family and friends, but their return journey was thrown into chaos when the delay threatened to keep them off the programme. Kay shared the ordeal on Instagram, confessing they feared they might not make it back in time.

A Race Against Time

In a clip shared by Kay, he and Nugent were seen sitting in an airport at 9pm. He walked towards the camera, picked it up, and briefly covered the lens. When he removed his hand, the pair were back in Salford on the famous red sofa, with a timestamp of 5am — eight hours after the first clip.

Kay captioned the post: "Blimey. That was close. After a lovely weekend away with friends and family, Sally and I had a twelve-hour flight delay - and feared we might miss Monday's @bbcbreakfast. But - hey - we made it. Who needs sleep?"

Viewers React

Followers responded with a mix of humour and sympathy. One jokingly suggested they should have brought Breakfast to the airport, while another wrote: "What a team!!! Can't imagine the stress..." Someone else commented: "Both looked great this morning though!!!" A third fan added: "Amazing and you two still look good at 5am."

As one person put it: "Ahhhh, I'd be proper panicking." Another chimed in: "Wow, no sleep, really wouldn't think it though lol"

Early Start Routine

Nugent has previously discussed her morning routine, revealing her alarm sounds at 3:45am, meaning the pair would have had precious little rest following their airport ordeal. Earlier this month, she gave viewers an insight into her commute as part of the This Is Our BBC campaign.

A voiceover of Nugent explained: "That car journey into work is really crucial, I have half an hour in the dark, everyone else is asleep, and I can go through the notes that the team have prepared through the night."

She added: "I was out on the road as a reporter for many, many years, so I know the pressure to make sure we get everything absolutely right. I ask the questions on behalf of the people at home. We hear the answers, then the people at home can make up their own minds."

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
