The Great British Bake Off saw its fifth contestant leave the tent on Tuesday, October 20, as Yannis was eliminated during Dessert Week after failing to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson.
The Channel 4 show's remaining bakers faced a series of challenges, starting with a staggered-start signature task involving self-saucing puddings. For the first time in the competition, bakers did not know their starting order until hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding called their names, meaning they could not look to one another for guidance.
Technical Challenge and Showstopper
Judge Nigella Lawson set the technical challenge, requiring contestants to use ingredients from The Gingham Pantry to personalise their bakes. Each baker had just five minutes to select what they needed, with any forgotten items leaving them struggling later in the task.
The final challenge saw contestants attempt a selection of classic retro puddings for the showstopper, which proved difficult to master. Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding then announced the results, with Connie winning Star Baker before Yannis was confirmed as the fifth elimination.
Yannis's Farewell and Fan Reaction
Following his exit, Yannis, a paediatrician born in Vienna and living in London, hugged his fellow contestants and said: "Thank you, it has been a pleasure. I grew up watching this programme and being here for five weeks is surreal." He added: "I will be very proud of that and it’s been absolutely wonderful."
Fans expressed their disappointment on X, with one viewer writing: "YANNIS NOOOOOO #GBBO", followed by broken heart emojis. Another commented: "Poor Yannis", while a third said: "Ooh. Wasn't expecting Yannis to go #gbbo." One viewer added: "Awh poor Yannis, but the right person to go tbh. Until next week tho #GBBO," and another wrote: "Gutted for Yannis but yayyyy star baker auntie Connie!!! #gbbo."
The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesday at 8:00 PM on Channel 4.
