In a jaw-dropping moment on Antiques Roadshow, a rare painting by celebrated Korean artist Kim Tschang-Yeul was valued at an astonishing £1 million, leaving both the owner and viewers stunned.
The artwork, featuring the artist's iconic "Water Drops" series, was brought to the show by a private collector who had no idea of its true worth. Expert Rupert Maas, visibly excited, confirmed its authenticity and revealed its staggering market value.
Why Is This Painting So Valuable?
Kim Tschang-Yeul, who passed away in 2021, was a pioneer of Korean abstract art. His "Water Drops" series, known for its hyper-realistic droplets, symbolise renewal and the cyclical nature of life. This particular piece, created in the 1980s, is exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
"This is one of the finest examples of his work I've ever seen," Maas declared. "The precision, the depth, and the sheer beauty of it make it a true masterpiece."
The Owner's Reaction
The owner, who inherited the painting from a relative, admitted they had "no clue" about its significance. "I just thought it was a beautiful piece," they said. "To hear it’s worth a million pounds is mind-blowing."
The episode, filmed at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire, is set to air soon, promising an unforgettable moment for art lovers and Antiques Roadshow fans alike.
