The Tragic Real Love Story of JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

This weekend, Ryan Murphy's interpretation of John F. Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's tumultuous love story airs on Disney+. The couple, along with Carolyn's sister Lauren Bessette, died in a plane crash in 1999 after less than three years of marriage.

Murphy's series has already stirred controversy, with netizens criticising lead actress Sarah Pigeon's wardrobe and hair colour as poor imitations of Bessette's style. However, early reviews have been favourable, with Variety calling it "a stunning portrait of love and its incompatibility with fame".

JFK Jr, born in 1960, was the son of President John F Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963. He became a lawyer, journalist and magazine publisher, launching George in 1995. He had high-profile relationships with Daryl Hannah, Sarah Jessica Parker and Brooke Shields.

Carolyn Bessette, born in New York and raised in Connecticut, worked at Calvin Klein as Director of Publicity. The couple met in 1992 in a Calvin Klein dressing room, but were on-and-off until 1994. JFK Jr reportedly regretted not introducing her to his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, before her death in 1994.

Their relationship became public in 1995, and Bessette moved into Kennedy's New York apartment, where paparazzi constantly waited outside. They kept their engagement and 1996 wedding private, marrying on a tiny island off Georgia.
