Amazon Prime Video has released all six episodes of the 2019 dark satire 'Catch-22', a series co-directed by and starring George Clooney. The show, based on Joseph Heller's 1961 novel, is now available for streaming on the platform.
Plot and Cast
Set during World War II, the story follows Captain John Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier played by Christopher Abbott, 40, known for roles in 'Girls' and 'Poor Things'. Yossarian finds himself trapped in a bureaucratic paradox: he can be excused from combat if deemed mentally unfit, but requesting such an exemption proves his sanity, making him ineligible. The series explores his desperate attempts to survive the war while facing an enemy that is not only the Axis powers but also his own military command, which constantly raises the number of missions required for discharge.
The logline states: 'Catch-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.'
Critical Reception and Awards
The series holds a 7.7/10 star rating on IMDb and an 84% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special. Despite these accolades, the show has been described by some fans as 'criminally neglected'. Reddit user GOATBrady4Life commented: 'Somehow the series fell through the cracks and was never really talked about, and I think it deserves more recognition.'
Mixed Audience Reactions
While many praise the adaptation, opinions vary. User Tegeus-Cromis_2000 said: 'I love the book, liked the old movie, couldn’t get through the series. It was just wooden and boring.' In contrast, Abject_Rhubarb_3430 called it 'amazing', adding: 'I randomly came across it last week and I finished last week.' The series marks Clooney's first regular TV role since playing Dr. Doug Ross on 'ER' in the 1990s. Clooney also served as an executive producer alongside other producers.
Background and Availability
Originally produced by Hulu and broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK, 'Catch-22' is now part of Amazon Prime Video's catalog. The 1970 film adaptation, starring Alan Arkin and Orson Welles, remains a classic. The series offers a contemporary take on Heller's darkly comedic exploration of war and bureaucracy.
