Amazon is reportedly considering a reboot of the reality show The Apprentice for its Prime Video service, with Donald Trump Jr floated as a potential host. The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon MGM Studios head Mike Hopkins began internal discussions about the reboot early last year, around the time Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term.
Amazon confirmed to Variety that preliminary talks about the show's future have taken place since acquiring MGM and the Apprentice franchise in 2022, but stated that a reboot is not in active development and that any speculation about hosts is unfounded. The Hollywood Reporter cited a source close to Trump Jr who said he learned of the potential role from the media.
When asked about the reports at an Oval Office event, former host Donald Trump gave a muted endorsement of his son: 'Well, I've been hearing it. So we'll see what happens. He's good. He's a good guy. He's probably good. He's got a little charisma going.'
A reboot with a Trump family member would signal Amazon's deepening ties with the family, following its $40 million purchase of the documentary Melania and a $35 million marketing spend, despite the film earning only $16 million at the box office. The original Apprentice ran from 2004 to 2015, with contestants competing for a job in Trump's empire. Trump left the show to run for office, and Arnold Schwarzenegger briefly hosted a reboot before stepping down due to the show's association with Trump.
