Alfie Moon faces a humiliating ordeal in EastEnders this week as his prostate cancer battle takes a new turn. The beloved character, played by Shane Richie, struggles to keep his condition hidden while dealing with the physical and emotional toll of treatment.
After a radiotherapy session where he feels isolated watching a fellow patient receive family visitors, Alfie accepts Linda's offer of a drink at the pub. Joined by Billy and Ian, the evening starts well but takes a devastating turn when Alfie cannot reach the toilet in time and has an accident in front of his friends.
Shane Richie revealed he personally pitched the scene to producer Chris Clenshaw after a friend's real-life experience. 'I asked if we could do a scene where Alfie wets himself because it happened to a friend of mine who went through prostate cancer,' Richie explained. 'Alfie loses his temper and shouts at Patrick and Billy rather than explaining what's going on.'
The actor admitted he underestimated the storyline's impact, saying: 'I've had people stop me in the street saying thank you for shining a light on this. One gentleman told his family as a result of watching EastEnders. If we can make a difference, it's worth it.'
Alfie has been keeping his cancer secret from all but Kat, Phil and Linda. However, Linda pressures him to open up, and later in the week he finally confides in Billy and Ian. 'It's like somebody's taken a weight off his shoulders,' Richie said of the confession scene, highlighting the 22-year friendship between the characters.
