Alexander Armstrong has firmly established himself as one of Britain's most recognisable television personalities. While he is best known as the host of BBC One's Pointless, his 30-year career has also included work as a comedian, actor, singer, radio presenter and children's author.
Now aged 56, Armstrong is back on television with his series Perfect Pub Walks. The show, which first launched in 2025, sees him taking famous faces for a stroll on some of the UK's most spectacular pub walks. However, away from the limelight, his personal life is equally busy as he enjoys time with his wife and four children.
Marriage
Alexander Armstrong is married to Hannah Bronwen Snow. The couple met through a mutual friend while she was working as an events coordinator for Harvey Nichols in 2002. They met again a few weeks later at a polo match, and Armstrong later told the Manchester Evening News he was 'completely smitten' from then on. A year later, he proposed to Hannah during a trip to Pisa, Italy, and has since described marrying her as one of the best choices he has ever made.
In a previous interview, Armstrong shared his thoughts on married life: 'Married life is fantastic. I'm really loving it. It gets better and better. In order for it to work at its best, you have to realise quite how good marriage is and I think that's what your first year is all about. I don't think getting married has changed our relationship at all though. At least it doesn't feel like it has. There is the very obvious thing that suddenly you're in it for the long run. But you don't worry so much about things, which is good.'
Children and Home Life
The couple share four sons together: Rex, Patrick, Edward and Henry. Since 2014, the family has been based in a peaceful Gloucestershire village. The Daily Express previously claimed that the family lives on an expansive farm, although it is unclear whether the property is still actively used for farming.
Speaking to The Guardian about his family, Armstrong said: 'Family means everything to me, and it is the reason why I do everything, and it, rather than my career, is my priority, and one serves the other. That was the crucial change in my life when we had children because, up to that point, my priority was very much my career. And I am now aware that one funds the other and so it is a tricky balance.'
The father of four, whose oldest is 19 and youngest is 11 at the time of writing, also shared his perspective on parenting with OK! magazine: 'You suddenly grasp what love truly means – that profound and magnificent love you feel for your children. You start to genuinely appreciate everything your own parents endured for you. I cringe when I look back at what an absolute nightmare I was as a youngster and how remarkably patient my dad, especially, proved to be.'
Surprise Family Links
Armstrong has some rather surprising family connections through his wife and his own historical lineage. His wife is related to several well-known media figures. Her sister is journalist and food writer Esther Walker, who is married to restaurant critic Giles Coren. Giles is also the brother of presenter and poker player Victoria Coren Mitchell, whose husband is comedian David Mitchell.
In 2010, Armstrong was left stunned after appearing on BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? The show, which delves into historical family lineage, uncovered an astonishing discovery: Armstrong is descended from William the Conqueror, the first Norman ruler of England who famously defeated Harold Godwinson's Anglo-Saxon army at the Battle of Hastings. Additionally, he is distantly connected to William Armstrong, the founder of Cragside, whose descendants continue to own Bamburgh Castle. His family lineage also links him to Edward Somerset, the sixth Earl and second Marquess of Worcester, a prominent royalist supporter during the English Civil War in 1642.
Perfect Pub Walks with Alexander Armstrong airs on Channel 4 on Friday, May 15 at 8pm.
