Jack Thorne, the creator of Netflix's hit series Adolescence, returns with a new drama titled Falling, which airs tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm. The six-part series is described as Thorne's 'first ever love story' and centres on a forbidden romance between a nun and a Catholic priest.
The drama stars Keeley Hawes as Anna, a devout nun who has dedicated her life to the convent, and Paapa Essiedu as David, a Catholic priest. Their unexpected encounter leads Anna to question her emotions and faith, while David grapples with his feelings and hidden secrets as he tries to instigate change in his community.
Hawes is known for roles in Line of Duty and Bodyguard, while Essiedu has appeared in The Capture and Black Mirror. The cast also includes Jason Watkins, Adrian Scarborough, and Niamh Cusack.
Thorne revealed that the series is loosely inspired by a real-life love story between a nun and a priest, brought to his attention by executive producer George Faber. However, Thorne emphasises that Falling is a work of fiction. The drama has been described as 'witty and moving'.
The first two episodes air on consecutive evenings, tonight and tomorrow, with subsequent episodes airing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays over the next two weeks, concluding on Wednesday, June 3.
