Channel 5 Replaces 22 Kids and Counting with New Holiday Show
22 Kids and Counting Ends, Replaced by Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday

The long-running Channel 5 documentary series 22 Kids and Counting has officially concluded its current season, with the final episode airing on Sunday night. The programme, which follows the lives of Britain's largest family, Sue and Noel Radford and their 22 children, wrapped up with a poignant and emotional instalment focused on uncovering ancestral roots.

Emotional Finale Explores Family History

In the concluding episode, Sue and Noel Radford embarked on a deeply personal journey to France, aiming to locate the final resting place of Sue's great-grandfather, James, who perished during the First World War. The couple faced initial disappointment as they scoured the Commonwealth War Memorial, unable to find a headstone bearing his name among the many graves marked simply as "A soldier of The Great War Machine Gun Corps".

"We have looked at every headstone here, and we can't find James' name on any of them," Sue remarked during the search. However, their perseverance paid off when they discovered his name inscribed on the monument wall dedicated to the Battle of Cambrai, which lists over 7,000 fallen soldiers.

A Moment of Reflection and Respect

Sue Radford described the moment as profoundly emotional. "It was emotional when we first saw his name," she stated. "Because it put it into perspective, doesn't it, that he was my great-grandad. I can't imagine what it was like to say goodbye to your sons. Sending them off to war when they're still children, really."

She added that visiting the site allowed her to pay respects that were impossible over a century ago: "It was nice to be able to pay my respects, the send off that couldn't have been done 109 years ago." The episode also featured Sue consulting with historian Professor Corinna Peniston-Bird to learn more about her ancestor's life and sacrifice.

New Programme Takes the Sunday Night Slot

Channel 5 has announced that 22 Kids and Counting will be replaced next Sunday by a new show titled Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday. The replacement programme is scheduled to air at 8pm, maintaining the channel's Sunday evening documentary lineup.

The synopsis for the debut episode reveals it will follow wealthy rock musician Rob and his wife Lydia, a high-end jewellery consultant, as they travel to Cyprus with their financially struggling best friends, Shelley and Vicky. The show promises to explore the dynamics of experiencing two vastly different holiday styles—Shelley and Vicky's preference for budget-friendly, party-centric getaways versus Lydia's inclination towards luxurious dinners and early nights.

Continuity in the Schedule

Following Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday, Channel 5 will continue its regular programming with Rich House, Poor House at 9pm, ensuring a seamless transition for viewers. The channel's strategy appears to focus on contrasting lifestyle documentaries that highlight economic and social disparities.

For fans of the Radford family, 22 Kids and Counting remains available for streaming on My5, allowing audiences to revisit past episodes and the emotional finale. The series conclusion marks the end of a chapter for one of Channel 5's most popular family-focused programmes, but opens the door for new content exploring similar themes of family, history, and modern British life.
