Spotify Wrapped has arrived, but many users are finding their annual listening summaries seem 'off'. The feature, which compiles users' top songs, artists, and genres, relies on data that may not always reflect true listening habits.
One reason for inaccuracies is that Spotify counts streams from any device, including background plays from smart speakers or car systems. If a song plays accidentally or in the background, it still counts towards your Wrapped. Additionally, shared accounts can skew results, as multiple users' listening is combined into one profile.
Another factor is that Spotify Wrapped only considers data from January 1 to October 31, not the full year. This means any listening in November and December is excluded. Furthermore, the algorithm prioritises recent listening, so a song played heavily in October might rank higher than a favourite from earlier in the year.
Users have also noted that the 'Top Genres' category can be misleading, as Spotify's genre classifications are broad and sometimes inaccurate. For example, a pop song might be labelled as 'dance pop' or 'art pop', leading to unexpected genre summaries.
Despite these quirks, Spotify Wrapped remains a popular annual tradition. To get a more accurate picture, users can check their 'On Repeat' or 'Repeat Rewind' playlists, which update more frequently. However, for many, the fun of Wrapped lies in its surprises and shareable graphics.
