True Crime Miniseries 'Under the Banner of Heaven' Captivates UK Audiences
The harrowing true crime miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, which dramatises the brutal 1984 murders of a mother and child in Utah, has become a must-watch for British viewers. The series, now available to stream in the UK via Hulu on Disney+, has been praised as gripping and atmospheric, drawing audiences into a complex investigation intertwined with religious fundamentalism.
A Disturbing Crime and Its Adaptation
In the summer of 1984, Brenda Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter Erica were killed in their American Fork, Utah home. This shocking crime, with deep connections to Mormonism, was documented in Jon Krakauer's non-fiction book Under the Banner of Heaven. The book was adapted into a seven-part miniseries in 2022, developed by Dustin Lance Black, the writer of the 2008 film Milk.
The series stars Andrew Garfield, famed for his role as Spider-Man, as fictional Latter-day Saint detective Jeb Pyre, and Gil Birmingham, known from the Twilight franchise, as his partner Bill Taba. Through these characters, viewers witness the investigation unfold, grappling with themes of faith and violence.
Critical Acclaim and Viewer Reactions
Under the Banner of Heaven has received significant critical praise, holding an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Andrew Garfield earned multiple award nominations, including for a Golden Globe and an Emmy, for his portrayal of Detective Pyre.
Viewers have described the series as absorbing and masterful, with one reviewer noting, "Gripping. Imaginative design, great production values and actors." Another added, "It's not just a mystery and it's not just a drama... it really does a tremendous job pouring on the suspense in a measured way." Many appreciated its deep dive into Mormon history and the tension between faith and secular investigation.
Controversies and Criticisms
Despite its acclaim, the series has faced criticism for its depiction of the Church of Latter Day Saints, although producers consulted with practising members during production. Some viewers found the pacing sluggish or took issue with flashbacks to the church's origins. One commented, "Maybe if this was a movie it would have been better but as it stands, it's a long drawn out story."
However, most audiences praised the series for its atmospheric quality and thoughtful exploration of faith and truth. Viewer Dave C remarked, "The lead performers work so well together, the tension and suspense are thoroughly believable. Engrossing, if a tad hard going at times, it is a brilliant limited series."
Streaming Availability
All seven episodes of Under the Banner of Heaven are currently available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ in the UK. The series offers a compelling blend of true crime drama and historical insight, making it a standout addition to the streaming landscape.
