Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story hailed a 'stunning feast'

Netflix's Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has left viewers 'absolutely destroyed' and 'completely emotionally wrecked', with fans praising the period drama's deep love story and its emotional impact. The series, a prequel spin-off of Bridgerton, premiered on the streaming platform on May 4, 2023.

A Prequel Focused on Queen Charlotte

Created by Shonda Rhimes, the show puts Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte in the spotlight. Its story is loosely based on an 'alternate history' take on Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz's rise to power and prominence in the late 18th century.

The official plot states: "Betrothed against her will to King George, young Charlotte arrives in London on her wedding day and faces scrutiny from the monarch's cunning mother."

Cast and Filming Locations

The six-episode series stars Bridgerton original cast members Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh, Ruth Gemmell, and Hugh Sachs, joined by younger counterparts played by India Amarteifio, Arsema Thomas, Connie Jenkins-Greig, and Sam Clemmett. Michelle Fairley also joins the cast.

Filming took place at locations including Hampton Court Palace, Blenheim Palace, Hatfield House, Belton House, Waddesdon Manor, and Merton College.

Critical and Audience Reception

The series holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, winning the award for Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling.

One viewer said: "The love story between Charlotte and George felt much deeper and more heartbreaking than I was prepared for. I also really liked that the show focused more on their relationship and the emotional side of their lives. And that final episode absolutely destroyed me — I was not ready for all those feelings."

Another fan added: "The love story felt so much deeper than I expected, and by the final episode I was completely emotionally wrecked. I honestly think it's even better than Bridgerton."

Critics have also praised the series. One wrote: "A stunning feast for the senses, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, is everything a prequel should be." Another noted: "If you love Bridgerton, and probably Downton Abbey, you'll love Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story."
