Netflix subscribers have reported struggling to sleep after binge-watching Marianne, an eight-episode horror series that one social media reviewer describes as the streaming platform's "most terrifying series of all time."
Film enthusiast EccyReviews, who reviews and rates films and television programmes on social media, has been championing the show. He said: "Honestly, I'll be surprised if you've even heard of it, and I guarantee that you definitely haven't seen it."
What is Marianne about?
The series follows a novelist who returns to her hometown only to discover that the malevolent spirit that haunted her dreams is also present in reality. Featuring Victoire Du Bois, Lucie Boujenah and Tiphaine Daviot, the limited series has garnered two award nominations for its narrative and performances.
EccyReviews explained: "The show that I am talking about is called Marianne. Now this is an eight-part limited series, which is genuinely terrifying as it follows this author who begins to write this book about this witch, then begins to realise that the witch she is writing about is actually real."
Viewer reactions
After a disturbing encounter with someone from her past, the author is forced to move back to her hometown and realises everything she has been writing about has actually come true. EccyReviews added: "She begins to realise that this witch has been haunting her her entire life, and it is genuinely incredible. Now this show is full of twists and turns, demonic possessions, and it is so unsettling. So make sure you get this show on your watch list because this is an absolute must watch."
Responding to the recommendation on TikTok, one viewer wrote: "Excellent series and super creepy!" A second user commented: "Very scary. I can't sleep at night." A third viewer claimed it is better than The Haunting of Hill House, a series widely celebrated for its storyline and jump scares. Another user said: "Never heard of Marianne but looks like that's my weekend sorted."
Marianne is available to watch on Netflix now.
