Netflix has unveiled the first look at its upcoming series adaptation of 'Man on Fire', starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the tormented protagonist John Creasy. The six-part series, set to premiere in 2026, reimagines the classic thriller novel by AJ Quinnell, previously adapted into films in 1987 and 2004, the latter featuring Denzel Washington.
In this version, Creasy is a former special forces operative haunted by a failed mission, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He attempts suicide before a former colleague invites him to Rio de Janeiro to rebuild his life. There, he forms a bond with the colleague's daughter, Poe (Billie Boullet), a young adult whose family was killed by a bomb. Creasy seeks redemption through a revenge spree against those responsible.
Abdul-Mateen II brings a formidable presence to the role, combining physicality with a stillness that makes him believable as a lethal fighter. His performance conveys the character's inner pain, suggesting a shift from his previous roles in comic-book adaptations like 'Aquaman' and 'Watchmen'. The series balances intense action with extended, talky scenes exploring Creasy's instability and Poe's grief.
While the show maintains the core narrative of a tough guy, surrogate daughter, and elaborate revenge, it adopts a more serious tone than typical high-octane thrillers. This approach makes some action sequences, such as Creasy driving a car onto a runway and leaping into a moving plane, feel absurd despite the grim demeanor. The series also features a memorable interrogation scene involving a car battery that is sure to make viewers wince.
As Creasy's mission takes him through Rio's favelas and exclusive enclaves, he gathers a group of misfit accomplices to help him overcome impossible odds. The series promises a gritty, emotionally charged take on the familiar story, with Abdul-Mateen II's performance at its core.
