Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming six-episode adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and while excitement is building, some fans have voiced doubts about the casting and the promise of "thoughtful creative turns." The miniseries is set to premiere on December 3.
A Faithful Adaptation with Creative Twists
The new series will follow closely to the original 1813 novel, which has captivated readers and fans of previous adaptations. However, Netflix has confirmed there will also be some "thoughtful creative turns," though details remain unclear.
The adaptation is written by author and writer Dolly Alderton, with Euros Lyn, known for his work on Heartstopper, serving as director. Alderton recently shared a sneak peek with fans at the Jane Austen Festival.
Casting Concerns Emerge
The cast includes Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy, Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Louis Partridge as George Wickham, and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet. While some fans are thrilled, others have expressed reservations.
One fan commented: "I'm not sold on the casting of Lizzie and Darcy yet, but I'll still watch it. Hopefully they win me over!" Another added: "They all look too old for their characters. They should be in their 20s. Lizzy 20, Jane 22, Mr. Collins 25, Mr. Darcy 27/28."
A different user posted: "She is the perfect actress for Princess Diana but NOT Elizabeth Bennett." Another wrote: "Literally so happy with the choice for cast except for Elizabeth Bennet. It might ruin the whole adaptation for me. Couldn’t even finish the trailer."
Excitement Remains High
Despite the criticism, many fans are eagerly anticipating the release. One person shared: "Olivia Colman, God bless! I could watch 50 different adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and still love every single one. I’ll never get tired of this story. And with Olivia Colman in it, you just know it’s going to be good!"
Another fan admitted: "Nothing compares to the timeless dynamic between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The cinematography and atmosphere in this look stunning. Can’t wait to watch!"
Pride and Prejudice is streaming on Netflix from December 3.
