Netflix fans say 'magnificent' period drama left them 'emotionally wrecked'

Netflix viewers are hailing Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story as a 'magnificent' period drama, with many saying the six-part series left them 'completely emotionally wrecked' by its closing episode.

The show, created by Shonda Rhimes, launched on the streaming platform on 4 May 2023 as a prequel spin-off to Netflix's hit programme Bridgerton. It centres on Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte, with a narrative loosely inspired by an 'alternate history' interpretation of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz's rise to power and prominence in the late 18th century.

Viewers praise the love story

One fan confessed they were 'absolutely destroyed' by the series, insisting they were 'not ready for all those feelings'. Another added: "The love story felt so much deeper than I expected, and by the final episode I was completely emotionally wrecked. I honestly think it's even better than Bridgerton."

A further audience review reads: "A short yet very impactful series. A lot of things unfolded and a lot of emotions were involved. The chemistry of the leads are definitely unmatched. The casting for the characters' young and older versions are insane, I cannot imagine a better cast to play the roles. The ending literally punched a hole in my heart, I cannot stop thinking about it."

Cast, locations and awards

The spin-off features Bridgerton originals Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh, Ruth Gemmell and Hugh Sachs, alongside younger counterparts played by India Amarteifio, Arsema Thomas, Connie Jenkins-Greig and Sam Clemmett. Michelle Fairley also joins the cast.

The series was shot at several prestigious locations, including Hampton Court Palace, Blenheim Palace, Hatfield House, Belton House, Waddesdon Manor and Merton College. It received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning the prize for Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling.

Critical acclaim

Boasting an impressive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has drawn widespread praise from critics. One review states: "A stunning feast for the senses, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, is everything a prequel should be." Another notes: "If you love Bridgerton, and probably Downton Abbey, you'll love Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story."

The official synopsis reads: "Betrothed against her will to King George, young Charlotte arrives in London on her wedding day and faces scrutiny from the monarch's cunning mother." Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is available to stream on Netflix.
