Netflix's upcoming live-action reboot of Scooby-Doo has drawn criticism from fans who claim the titular dog looks nothing like the original. The series, titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, is set to premiere in 2027 and follows the teenage mystery-solving gang as they investigate a supernatural murder witnessed by a Great Dane puppy.
In a short preview clip released by Netflix, the puppy—voiced by veteran actor Frank Welker—appears to be a chocolate Labrador rather than a Great Dane, according to many viewers. Social media users expressed disappointment, with one calling it '#NotMyScoobyDoo' and another saying Netflix 'broke my childhood'. Critics also noted the dog's lack of expression, with one user joking that 'that dog would not eat a sandwich'.
However, not all feedback was negative. Some fans praised the puppy's cuteness and expressed excitement for the series. One user commented, 'Aww, he's just a baby! Give him time and a lifetime supply of Scooby Snacks.' The clip shows the dog jumping into Shaggy's arms, played by Tanner Hagen, who sports a green striped jumper and brunette hair.
The original live-action films from the 2000s, starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, remain fan favourites. The 2002 movie grossed $275 million worldwide and has a cult following. The new series is created by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg.
