Netflix has sparked fury among viewers after axing the critically acclaimed military drama Boots following just one season. The coming-of-age series, which premiered in October, starred Miles Heizer as Cameron Cope, a closeted gay teenager who spontaneously enlists in the United States Marine Corps.
Boots was the final series co-produced by legendary screenwriter and WWII veteran Norman Lear, who died in 2023 at age 101. Despite a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and decent viewership—averaging 9.4 million views in its debut week—the show faced criticism from conservatives and was labelled “woke garbage” by the Pentagon, according to the Mirror.
Fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment. One Reddit user commented: “That is so frustrating. It was a popular show and it wasn’t expensive. There was nothing ‘woke’ about Boots.” Another wrote: “My day is completely ruined after this news. This cast was amazing.” A third added: “I may actually cry. I haven’t felt so connected to a series and its characters in so long.”
The cancellation comes as Netflix prepares to acquire film studio Warner Bros, a deal requiring governmental approval. One IMDb reviewer called Boots “the best show of 2025”, praising its accurate portrayal of military life and camaraderie. Another said: “I wish I could watch it again for the first time. I would give it infinity out of 10.”
