Netflix has confirmed that the acclaimed drama Ozark will end after its upcoming fourth season, which will be expanded to 14 episodes. The streaming service announced the renewal in June 2020, revealing that the Byrde family's story will conclude with the longest season yet, split into two seven-episode halves released at separate times.
Showrunner Chris Mundy expressed enthusiasm about the extended run, stating: "A super-sized season means super-sized problems for the Byrdes. I’m excited to end with a bang(s)." He added that Netflix recognised the importance of giving the series more time to conclude the narrative in a fulfilling way. The final season is expected to begin filming in November, with a release date yet to be announced.
The core cast will return, including Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, Laura Linney as Wendy Byrde, Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore, Sofia Hublitz as Charlotte Byrde, and Skylar Gaertner as Jonah Byrde. Additional returning actors include Charlie Tahan and Lisa Emery, while questions remain over Madison Thompson’s character Erin Pierce and the possibility of Janet McTeer’s Helen Pierce reappearing despite her character’s death.
Fans have speculated about how the series might end, with theories ranging from a massacre of the Byrde family to unresolved storylines involving cartel hitman Nelson. The decision to end the show after season four appears to be a creative choice to go out on a high note, rather than due to cancellation.
