The Boys Season 5 Revives Memories of Translucent's Explosive Demise
As the third episode of The Boys season 5 aired on Prime Video this week, fans were prompted to revisit one of the series' earliest and most shocking moments: the death of Translucent. This original member of The Seven met a gruesome end in season 1, leaving behind a son named Maverick, whose story has since unfolded across the franchise.
The Fatal Confrontation: Hughie Campbell's Defining Moment
In season 1, Translucent, portrayed by Alex Hassell, discovers a bugging device planted by Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) in a Vought Tower bathroom. The invisible supe tracks Hughie to his workplace, launching a violent attack. Before Translucent can inflict serious harm, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) intervenes dramatically, driving his car through the shop's front. A fierce struggle ensues, with Billy and Hughie overpowering the superhero and taking him prisoner at a safehouse.
There, with Frenchie's (Tomer Capone) assistance, they learn that Translucent's skin is impenetrable. As a precaution, they insert an explosive device into his rectum. Later, when Translucent escapes his cage, he confronts Hughie, who threatens to detonate the bomb unless the supe returns. Translucent attempts to bargain, promising Hughie hero status if he is freed. Initially tempted, Hughie ultimately makes a grim decision, activating the detonator and causing Translucent to explode violently.
Maverick: The Son Left Behind
Maverick, Translucent's son, first appears as a child in season 2, attending his father's funeral without yet manifesting powers. His character gains prominence in Gen V season 1, where he is revealed to have inherited his father's invisibility abilities. As an adult, Maverick serves as a Resident Assistant at Godolkin University's dorm, interacting with characters like Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) and Emma Meyer (Lizzie Broadway).
The adult Maverick is played and voiced by Australian actor Nicholas Hamilton, known for roles in It and Love, Victor. His real name is Samuel Schecht. As a child in The Boys season 2, he was portrayed by Charles Altow. This lineage adds depth to the series' exploration of legacy and consequence within the supe world.
Translucent's Impact and Actor Alex Hassell
Despite appearing in only three episodes before his death, Translucent left a significant mark on The Boys narrative. Alex Hassell's portrayal of the invisible supe has been memorable, with the actor later gaining acclaim for roles such as Rupert Campbell-Black in Rivals on Disney+. His other notable performances include Metatron in His Dark Materials and Rick in Everything Now, showcasing his versatility beyond the superhero genre.
The resurgence of interest in Translucent's death during season 5 highlights the show's intricate storytelling, where past actions continue to reverberate. New episodes of The Boys air weekly on Prime Video, with the first three already available for streaming, keeping fans engaged with its dark, action-packed universe.
