Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Announce New Netflix Drama Amid Partnership Rumours
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced a new drama series in partnership with Netflix, as speculation mounts about the future of their deal with the streaming giant. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will serve as executive producers on the untitled project, which centres on the competitive world of polo in Wellington, Florida.
Details of the New Drama Series
The series is currently in early production stages, with no premiere date confirmed. It will explore the messy dynamics between two rival polo teams and the families that lead them, set against the backdrop of the high-flying equestrian community in Wellington. According to reports from Deadline, the drama aims to widen the scope of what is considered an elitist sport beyond wealthy owners and star players.
Francisca X. Hu, known for her work on the modern reboot of Dynasty and Fox's Sleepy Hollow, is reportedly writing the series. This marks the second polo-based project the Sussexes have undertaken for Netflix, following their 2024 docuseries on the sport.
Background of Previous Polo Project
The 2024 polo docuseries, which Harry and Meghan also executive produced, performed poorly for Netflix. It ranked at 3,436 out of approximately 7,000 shows, garnering only 500,000 views globally by mid-2025. Critics labelled the documentary as unrelatable and pompous, with Eric Schiffer, chair of Reputation Management Consultants, telling Newsweek it felt fake and reeked of entitlement.
Despite the criticism, showrunner Miloš Balać praised the couple's collaboration, noting their extensive knowledge of polo and desire to bring new audiences to the sport. He described both Harry and Meghan as amazing collaborators from the start.
Netflix Partnership Under Scrutiny
The announcement of the new drama comes amid rumours that the Sussexes' relationship with Netflix has hit a roadblock. A recent Variety report cited multiple Netflix sources claiming the couple were difficult to communicate with, leading to speculation about their deal's viability.
In response, Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria publicly denied these claims at the Next on Netflix event last week. She reiterated that Netflix still maintains a partnership with Harry and Meghan, with movies and TV projects in development. Bajaria added that deals come and go regularly, and non-renewals often don't attract media attention.
Future Prospects and Industry Reactions
This new drama series represents a shift from documentary to scripted content for the Sussexes, potentially aiming to overcome the relatability issues of their previous work. The polo theme remains consistent, drawing on Harry's long history with the sport, but the fictional format may offer broader appeal.
Industry observers will be watching closely to see if this project can succeed where the docuseries faltered, especially as Netflix continues to evaluate its high-profile partnerships. The couple's ability to deliver engaging content could be crucial for the longevity of their deal with the streaming service.
