BBC to show 38 live Serie A matches free-to-air

The BBC has agreed a deal to show 38 live Serie A matches, with games set to be broadcast free-to-air on TV and BBC iPlayer across the UK. Coverage begins this weekend.

Coverage details and broadcast plans

BBC Scotland will spearhead the coverage, though games will also be available on iPlayer. One fixture from each round of matches will be shown throughout the campaign, split between BBC Scotland and BBC Alba. During the previous season, BBC Alba aired eight contests from the Italian top division.

The coverage is being described as a network proposition, with BBC Scotland handling production. Last year, the broadcaster paid tribute to Channel 4's Football Italia and featured presenter James Richardson as a guest ahead of Napoli's encounter with Bologna.

Broadcasting rights and audience

The broadcasting rights will be divided between TNT Sports and DAZN, with BBC ALBA presenting matches in both Gaelic and English. A source informed the Scotsman that the decision to commit to the coverage was an obvious choice.

"The opportunity to continue and expand our coverage across BBC iPlayer for the coming season was a no-brainer," they said. "We are bringing live European football to a free-to-air audience. Arguably, Serie A remains the most glamorous league in the world, and with even more British players this season. We hope the coverage goes down well."

Scottish representation in Serie A

Enthusiasm for Serie A has grown considerably in Scotland in recent years, with substantial representation from the nation in the competition. Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is accompanied by Billy Gilmour at Napoli as they aim to reclaim their crown from Inter Milan following last term's disappointment. McTominay has established himself as one of the division's stars.

Josh Doig and Kieron Bowie will be the first to appear on the box, however. The Sassuolo pair will take on Atalanta in the opening fixture of the arrangement on Sunday, with the latter back in the top flight on loan after suffering relegation with Verona in 2025/26. Che Adams remains at Torino, while Lennon Miller will turn out for Udinese. Despite transfer rumours, Lewis Ferguson is anticipated to keep playing for Bologna for now.

Media rights and investment

In April, reports emerged that Serie A approached private equity investors regarding the potential sale of a minority stake in its overseas media rights operation. The league has encountered difficulties selling its media rights internationally, with the Champions League's expansion and the Premier League's popularity believed to have created obstacles.

Last year, Serie A appointed JP Morgan to examine possibilities for a vehicle containing the league's international media rights. Funds Apollo, CVC, Ares and Sixth Street were all approached according to Reuters. La Liga and Ligue 1 have previously welcomed investors taking minority stakes in their media rights ventures in return for immediate capital and revenue sharing.
