Netflix to Premiere Intimate David Attenborough Documentary on Gorilla Encounter
Netflix is set to release a brand-new factual film led by the iconic Sir David Attenborough, titled A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough. This documentary, scheduled for launch on Friday, April 17, promises to be one of Attenborough's most poignant works yet, revisiting a memorable moment from his storied career.
Revisiting a Historic Meeting with Pablo the Gorilla
The film delves into Attenborough's first encounter with a baby gorilla named Pablo in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda back in 1978. Now 99 years old, Attenborough reflects on this experience, drawing from his personal journals and archival footage from the groundbreaking series Life on Earth. The documentary blends this historical footage with a contemporary exploration of how Pablo's direct descendants, known as the Pablo Group, are thriving nearly 50 years later.
Attenborough shares his thoughts on the encounter and the broader implications for conservation, offering an intimate look at his reflections and the enduring impact of that initial meeting.
Behind the Scenes: Production and Key Figures
A Gorilla Story is directed by Oscar winner James Reed, renowned for My Octopus Teacher, and produced by Emmy-winning veteran nature documentarian Alastair Fothergill. The production involved extensive filming over 250 days across several years, with three camera operators working in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Shoots were conducted in four to six-week intervals, repeated four or five times over two years to capture a variety of natural behaviors.
Fothergill, who has collaborated with Attenborough for 35 years, highlighted the uniqueness of this project, stating, "Nobody had ever had the chance to do a proper film on gorillas, and I knew it was critical to get a variety of behaviour. I knew this was a film that had never been made from a pure natural history sense." He praised Attenborough's enduring vitality, noting, "He is extraordinary. The pieces to camera are still absolutely beautiful."
Conservation Legacy and Hope for the Future
The documentary also sheds light on the role of pioneering primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey, whose work with mountain gorillas was instrumental in making the original 1978 documentary possible.
