A new three-part docuseries, 9/11 Reunited, chronicles emotional reunions between survivors of the 9/11 terror attacks and the people who saved their lives. The series, marking 25 years since the event, brings together survivors, first responders and witnesses whose lives were changed forever.
Disney+ and National Geographic said: "Many of these emotional reunions take place for the first time in 25 years, providing a rare opportunity to ask long-held questions, express gratitude, and reflect on how those moments have stayed with them for decades."
First-time reunions after 25 years
Across the episodes, survivors, first responders and witnesses reunite with the strangers, rescuers and everyday heroes who changed their lives. An emotional trailer shows one male survivor explaining how "it has been 25 years and without both of them, I would have never made it out. I have always wanted to say thank you."
Later in the trailer, he is seen hugging a gentleman, saying: "I want to tell you, if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't be here." Amid harrowing footage from the time of the event, a female survivor says through tears: "That day, someone risked their life to save my life. Because of him I had hopes, dreams, like it means everything."
Acts of courage amid the chaos
Another female expresses: "It's been 25 years and I never saw or heard of him again," before she is reunited with someone who saved her life, as she shares: "That bond will always be there between us and I want him to know that he changed my life." One survivor explains how the documentary is also a chance to show the "best of humanity" who chose to sacrifice themselves to save another human being.
The 9/11 attacks, which led to thousands of fatalities, also resulted in the deaths of firefighters, paramedics, NYPD officers and Port Authority police officers who put others before themselves.
Streaming and broadcast details
National Geographic said of the series: "On 11 September 2001, as the deadliest terrorist attacks in US history unfolded, strangers found each other in the most unimaginable circumstances. In the midst of fear and devastation, split-second acts of courage and compassion created bonds that would last a lifetime. Twenty-five years later, 9/11 Reunited brings those people back together."
Some have spent decades searching for the chance to say thank you. Others are finally ready to ask the questions they have carried ever since. 9/11 Reunited is available to stream on Disney+. The series will also air on Sunday, August 23, from 9pm on National Geographic.
