Prince William has “every right to be angry” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to a royal expert, as the couple’s recent visit to Nottingham has been accused of going against the late Queen Elizabeth II’s wishes.
The couple travelled to Nottingham on October 15, carrying out three separate visits in the city. They were met by well-wishers on a walkabout upon arrival, with the outing resembling a royal engagement despite the couple no longer being working royals.
Expert Says William Has Right to Be Angry
Royal expert Duncan Larcombe told New magazine: “William has every right to be angry, because they are doing precisely what the late Queen said they could not do. They have cashed in on their royal status, making tens of millions of pounds by selling out the royal brand - a brand that is usually tightly controlled and carefully orchestrated.”
He added: “They are riding roughshod over those rules. You couldn't ask for a clearer example of 'half-in, half-out'. The fact that Meghan is accompanying Harry on engagements indicates she has no intention of toeing the line.”
Larcombe also said: “As a couple, they intend to carry on regardless of Charles and William's views. William will likely be furious because the royal rota is planned months in advance carefully. Even if it doesn't directly clash with William and Kate's schedule, it is guaranteed to steal headlines because of Harry and Meghan's massive global profile.”
Couple Living in the UK Again
The late Queen was reportedly unhappy with the couple taking a “half-in, half-out” approach to royal life when they announced they were stepping away from royal duties. Harry and Meghan have lived in the US since 2020, weeks after their decision to step back was announced, but decided to return to the UK in August. They are now thought to be living in the Cotswolds with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
An insider told Woman's Day that William felt the Nottingham outing was “distasteful”, particularly as the couple continue to embark on their independent business ventures and reap the benefits that come with being royals.
The couple are still at loggerheads with the royals, although tensions between Harry and his father, King Charles, appeared to have thawed.
Sussexes Unfazed by Criticism
A friend of the couple told HELLO!: “It doesn't trouble them. They never agreed they wouldn't be half in, half out. That was what was decided and foisted upon them. They're just living their lives and they can, because they’re financially independent.”
This comes just weeks after the King released a statement claiming that there was “no change” to their status regarding their return to the UK, adding that they should be treated as “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests”. Their latest appearance appears to have been a success, with both Harry and Meghan looking happy to step out for the visit.
