Earl Spencer has spoken with both Prince Harry and Prince William, following the release of his bombshell book about Princess Diana, it has been claimed.
In Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Mr Spencer makes a series of claims about King Charles, including the one he told him, “Rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough,” after the princess’s brother objected to her sons walking behind her coffin. He also alleges Charles, then the Prince of Wales, “sounded giddily elated – like a lottery winner” when he spoke to the earl after the princess’s death.
Palace response to the claims
The earl’s claims sparked a war of words with Buckingham Palace, who hit back saying “fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory”.
In a new interview on CBS Mornings on Monday, the earl gave new insight into whether he’s spoken to his nephews.
What Charles Spencer said
Host Gayle King asked him: “Have you talked to them [William and Harry] after the book?” to which Spencer replied, “Yes, I have.”
She then asked whether the brothers “approve” of the book, to which Diana’s brother replied: “I don’t know. I haven’t asked about approval.
“Harry was sort of like, ‘Is there anything in there that would be embarrassing to me?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ I’m very specific about people’s privacy.”
The earl declared: “I decided not to have anyone involved in the book, so no one knew about it except my wife, obviously, and the publishers.
“I didn’t tell any of the family until just before it was released publicly as a thing because I didn’t want anyone to think — particularly with Harry, who people know I had to stay in the summer — that he was in any way involved in this.
“It was really important for me that they weren’t.”
